Pakistani film ‘Dunya’ featuring eunuchs hits theatres

The long awaited Punjabi feature film ‘Dunya’ has been released all over Pakistan. The film’s star cast includes Maumar Rana, Saima Khan, Rambo, Nargis and Shafqat Cheema. In spite of all the super stars presence in the film, it is expected that the limelight will be the real life eunuch who have performed in the movie for the very first time. The director of film is Shahid Rana who has high hopes from his film.

The media’s portrayal of khwaja siras (transgender individuals) is often negative. In the film industry, such a character is either the subject of a joke or frowned upon and given limited roles, says the distinguished director, who is making a comeback after five years.
Seventy members of the transgender community are acting alongside the film industry’s prominent stars.

With this film, for the first time, Pakistan’s favourite villain Shafqat Cheema will be playing a positive role in a Punjabi film — the role of a guru Khwaja Sira. In the movie, Moammar Rana works as a doctor in a village where he meets Saima. Rambo, who plays Saima’s brother, is the sole-breadwinner for their family. When his sister is ready for marriage, he leaves the village for the city to earn money for her dowry. His struggle begins when he arrives in the city and his horse is stolen outside of Data Sahib’s durbar.

“In the film, Rambo dances to make money for Saima’s dowry, but the result is that no one is willing to marry his sister,” says veteran screenwriter and lyricist Abdullah Chilli, who has penned the script for Dunya.

A series of mishaps lands Rambo behind bars, where Shafqat Cheema introduces him to the world of dancing in Heera Mandi and also plays the role of a mentor who gets Rambo on his feet.
Although it seems that Dunya is going to be a film that touches upon some serious themes, Rana clarifies that it will still be entertaining.

FFC steps ahead to support Pakistan Film Industry

Pakistan’s premier fertilizer manufacturer FFC has taken a step forward to support the dying film industry of Pakistan by arranging a special show of Pakistan’s latest and most anticipated movie “WAAR” here at Cine Gold Plex, Bahria Town Islamabad. FFC’s Corporate Communications department arranged the Corporate Movie Night Out for all FFC Employees with family as an effort to increase internal communications “WAAR” Movie cast was invited to highlight FFC efforts in pursuing patriotic endeavors to serve the country.

A large number of FFC employees and their families attended the show making the event memorable. The presence of film’s crew made the event more interesting as the audience got a chance to share their thoughts with young and energetic movie director Bilal Lashari and his team regarding movie and national film industry. The audience largely appreciated the theme and making of the movie by terming it a new start for national film industry.

Pakistan is a nation that has the tendency to surprise the world and its people in the most unforeseen ways. “Waar” is the best example of brilliant cinematography and 145 minutes of utter surprise. At several times one wonders, that whether they are really watching a Pakistani movie, said a spectator after watching the movie. Waar has all the ingredients which improved the flavor of the complete movie. Leaving behind the fact that the movie is heavily budgeted, there are other feathers in the cap. According to me, every big budgeted movie does not guarantee quality content and strong narration but Waar is a totally different case, a youth added.

Javed Shaikh: Pakistani film industry is struggling, but will revive

Pakistani actor Javed Shaikh on Thursday expressed his confidence that his country’s moribund movie industry will see a strong revival.

“Our Pakistani movie industry is like a new born baby and it’s emerging as a strong individual day by day by taking new turns and making new films. Recently I saw films such as Waar and Zinda Bhaag release internationally and that’s a good sign,” said Shaikh at a press conference in Dubai. He was due to attend the special screening of his sports drama Main Hoon Shahid Afridi on Thursday night at the Grand Cineplex.

Like most Pakistani films, it‘s international release was also delayed. Six months ago, the film which is about a face-off between a team of misfits and established champions saw robust box-office success in Pakistan.
“Main Hoon Shahid Afridi is like a wave of fresh air which will herald new kinds of cinema,” said Shaikh. His next project is a violent love story that will be partly filmed in Dubai.

“I am planning a co-production with India. It’s about India and Pakistan but it’s going to be a positive story that will appeal to both countries,” said Shaikh, who is against the idea of bashing up their neighboring rival India to gain eyeballs. Recently, Shaan’s espionage blockbuster Waar was criticized for vilifying India. He believes that copying Bollywood wouldn’t help their cause either.

“Indian films are 1000 times better made films. Our budgets are different. For instance, a Dhoom 3 budget is massive, there’s no competing. We can’t make movies on that scale, but we are attempting to make good films on a small budget.”

One such success story is Main Hoon Shahid Afridi, claims actor and producer Humayun Saeed.

“It’s Pakistan’s first sports drama. Initially, the distributors in Pakistan weren’t confident about its success. But when they saw the interest in the movie, their confidence increased. Many have already seen the pirated version, but I am confident that they will enjoy watching it in theatres. After all, there’s something magical and different about watching a clear print on a big screen,” said Saeed.

The Pakistani film industry has been languishing for decades and has been crippled by piracy and lack of funds for film-makers.

So has cricketer Shahid Afridi seen the film? “Yes he has seen it. He enjoyed the film and said it was a good effort. But he also told me to make films the way English films are made,” said Saeed alluding to Hollywood films and its slick standards.

Produced by ARY Films, Main Hoon Shahid Afridi is playing in the UAE cinemas this weekend.

Pakistani film Main Hoon Shahid Afridi releases in UAE

Cinema and cricket serve as a uniting platform for people from the South Asian subcontinent and Pakistani film Main Hoon Shahid Afridi, which is based on cricket, released in the UAE on Thursday.

The cast and crew of this film Javed Sheikh, Humayun Saeed, Hamza Abbasi, Mathira, Shahzad Nasib, Noman Habib and Gohar Rasheed visited the Khaleej Times office on Thursday evening to talk about their movie.

“We do not make a lot of films in Pakistan, especially a sports film. People questioned us initially as to why we are making a sports film and not some entertaining romantic film but we were confident about our subject and hence decided to go ahead with this project,” said lead actor Humayun.

The film comes to the UAE post its August 2013 release in Pakistan. “We should have released the film in 2013 but as a team, it was a learning process for us. Our distributors told us that there is still demand for this film so we are excited to bring this film for our Indian and Pakistani friends in the UAE,” added Humayun, who is also a co-producer for this film.

The film premiered in the UAE  at the Grand Cineplex on Thursday, as organised by Dream Advertising.

Javed Sheikh spoke about  the emerging market of Pakistani film industry. “It is growing day by day. Starting last year, we had three great films that came out. There was Zinda Bhaag (2013). Even though it was a Pakistani film, Naseeruddin Shah played an important role in the film. A lot of Pakistani artists work in Indian films, including myself, so it was good to see an Indian actor working in our film. Waar (2013) changed the scenario for us; it broke all previous records at the box office. There is a new cinema coming up and making good films. There are 50 films in the pipeline right now with bright new talents and infrastructure.”

Sahir Lodhi all set for his big screen debut

You have watched in bewilderment as he melted women’s hearts with his charm and wit on live television, and even on the radio, but it is now time to witness Sahir Lodhi’s flamboyance on the silver screen. The talk show host has recently completed scripting his first feature film, titled Mausam, and will be officially launching it by month’s end.

Lodhi has always had a penchant for acting and was offered a number of opportunities outside of Lahore, but his business commitments restricted him take up any project. “I always wanted to do films. In fact, television was more or less an accident. Nevertheless it was a blessing; it came at a time when I became a trendsetter and everybody then followed. Eventually, I got tired of all of that and wanted to do something bigger,” says Lodhi.

Lodhi has since then taken a break from the small screen and focused completely on his film. “If you do a show for five to six months regularly, who would want to come and watch you in cinemas? So, I wanted to take this break,” says Lodhi, who spends most of his time at the Lahore Hockey Stadium, where he works as the youth ambassador and media organiser for the Punjab Youth Festival.

Lodhi is not only acting in the project, but also producing it, under his and partner Irfan Rafique’s banner called Red Ocean. Rafique, who has worked closely with the delightful host, says that Lodhi has a great sense of creativity and is business-savvy. Hence, film-making seems logical for him to pursue and the originality of this script was apt.

“We thought the story is very powerful and he had been trying to work on the story for two to three years. When we discussed the idea with potential sponsors, even their response was positive because they found the subject to be very interesting and original,” says Rafique. “That’s why, when we formed the company, we decided to put everything else on the backburner and work on the feature film as our first major production.”

With Mausam, Lodhi hopes to add to the diversity of film-making, now prevalent in Pakistani cinema. The film which is about a father-son relationship will be directed by veteran screenwriter and director Pervaiz Kaleem. The project also includes new talents like fresh art directors from the National College of Arts in Lahore and an undisclosed London-trained film-maker who has the experience of working with Indian directors.

Lodhi emphasises he is serious about quality film-making and therefore, he is maintained a balance of experienced and fresh people on his production team. “This isn’t a run-of-the-mill, typical Lollywood or even Bollywood project. Instead its aesthetics can be related to Hollywood films because while it is a romantic film, the emotional concept behind it is very different from usual,” asserts Lodhi.

It is apparent that with this film, Lodhi has been able to follow his life-long dream of entering commercial cinema. “People don’t know this but even when I was doing television, I was trying really hard to do films, but it just never happened. Now I feel it’s the right time, and hopefully it will pay off,” he says.

The team is currently looking for a female lead, which will likely be from India. However, there have been rumours that they have signed British model Puja Panchkoty. The film will go on the floors in the coming few months, while the official press announcement will be made by the end of this month.
